Resolved Question: AROUND LAX: Should we rent, buy, or live on base?

We are new to the Air Force and my husband will be commissioning as an officer in the Spring. We don't have our orders yet, but have found out unofficially that his training and first assignment will be at the L.A. Air Force Base in El Segundo, CA. We haven't heard much of anything about the housing at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, other than that it's right by the beach. Does anyone know much about this area? How would it compare to renting or buying a place possibly closer to El Segundo? I think the social aspect of living on base might be best, as we've been married a year and will probably start having kids the first few years there and I want to stay home with them. Also, we wouldn't have to worry about the financial aspect of living on base since everything would be paid for. However, if other areas are better, or if we could even afford to buy a small place I'm wondering if that would be smarter to build up some equity. For anyone in this area . . . do you have any idea how much it may cost some first time homebuyers to buy a small place in a decent neighborhood? And how much might we expect to pay towards a mortgage per month? By "decent," I mean in a safe area where things are kept up and where the community may be a little closer knit. Is that possible to find in this area? I've looked on Craigslist, but don't know anything about which neighborhoods are best. Would buying be way out of our range if we could spend $2000-$3000 a month? I really have no idea what to expect in the L.A. area, because I know everything is so dang expensive. We could buy a mansion where we live now for the price of most condos in L.A. Thanks in advance for any advice!... Read More »
